The Miss Philippines-Earth has come a long, long way since its inception more than a decade ago thanks to our dear friend, Lorraine Schuck, concurrent executive vice president of Carousel Productions.
Through its ups and downs, Lorraine has remained steadfast in furthering this world-class pageant. Armed with an earnest yearning to produce a truly relevant pageantry aimed at preserving Mother Earth, Lorraine can be credited with putting Ms. Philippines-Earth where it is today.
Through the years I have been covering this one-of-a-kind beauty tilt, and I’m proud to say that this year’s edition is one of the best I’ve seen. Hosted by the bubbly actor-host Robi Domingo and former Ms. Earth 2008 Karla Henry, the affair was thrilling and went on quite smoothly. The event came with lots of surprises. Among highlights is actor JC de Vera’s surprise musical number. Since the participants of this year’s event were first presented, I had a gut feel that the ladies from the Visayas will come up strong – and my instincts didn’t fail me. Crowned winners were: Kimberly Covert of Dumaguete City (Water), Diane Carmele Querrer of Tanauan City (Air), Bianca Paz of Gapan City (Fire), Monique Teruelle Manuel of Dinalupihan, Bataan (Eco Tourism); and, of course, Jamie Herrell of Cebu City (Earth). Among judges, who evaluated this year’s contestants, were actress Cherie Gil, actor Christopher de Leon, cager Richard Peter Michael, WWF President Angela Ibay, Turkish Ambassador H.E. Esra Cankorur and Head of TwitMusic Micheal Seifert. The grand spectacle was held live at the MOA Arena and was aired on ABS-CBN.
